The study: solar energy for Italians is the future

The 60 per cent of Italians considers environmental sustainability a necessity. For the 28 percent is "a 'opportunities for development of the economy." And 'apparent from the third report "The Italians, the energy of the sun and the green economy", presented yesterday by Univerde Foundation at the conference Green Economy, New Society within Ecomondo, the International Fair of Material and Energy and Sustainable Development taking place these days in Rimini. The report gives an account of the results of the research, commissioned to IPR Marketing, conducted on a sample of a thousand Italian and older, interviewed on environmental sustainability.

The other side of the coin: the research shows that 53% of people surveyed felt that the theme of the green "just heard" from the productive world Italian, although it would be more to the European market (71%). 90% believe that the government should provide more incentives for renewable sources. The gap between that respondents perceive the beautiful country and the continent seems to be reflected from the production data collected in 2009 by industry associations, which found some room for improvement: the energy "green" contributed to 6.8% of final gross requirements, compared to an EU average of 10.3%.

Taken because as consumers, and therefore an active part of the issues of the relationship, the respondents turned out to be sensitive to the application of sustainable practices put in place by companies and businesses: 85% proved to be attentive to eco-sustainability of buildings, 81% to that of the restaurants, 80% of the supermarkets, hairdressers fourth place, for which 71% of respondents believe the important attention to the environment.

Solar is the most preferred because of several factors: for 79% of the energy is to aim for the future (compared with a 18% favorable to investment on nuclear power) and the same percentage of people recommend to their children to work in a solar power plant, compared with 6% of a nuclear power plant and 1% of a conventional power plant. 90% of respondents considers solar energy safer although more expensive (62%) compared to other sources.

These considerations seem to find support in the estimates already highlighted recently by the report Solar Generation 2010 (Greenpeace / EPIA), according to which the plants that use the sun cover 5% of the world's energy needs by 2020 and 9% by 2030, a market in which Italy has great potential to have a major role in terms of installed capacity, production and employment.

The report also highlights the geographical distribution of preferences are most favorable to the inhabitants of the solar center (95%), predominantly female (87%) aged between 18 and 34 years, while among men there is a slightly greater propensity for nuclear power (21% vs. 18% of women) and wind power (38% versus 19% of women). The more favorable to install solar systems in a building are the inhabitants of the North (91%) and 35-54 age group (98%).
